Archipelagos 166

Everywhere I turn, Dubrovnik is pure scenery: medieval walls welded seamlessly into cliffs, Mediterranean houses locked together like building-blocks, flowers and vines tangling through the terra-cotta tiles, and the passages that slither between walls. Shards of light stab the stone floors; a stray cat scuttles through a cracked wooden door. Take another step and the crystal sea emerges. Another step, a precipice opens. A third, copper mountains. Dubrovnik is a flipbook of postcards, beautiful to the point of hyperventilation; here, California meets Middle Earth. No such place should exist in reality.
