Renaissance Faire 018

What is it about the Renaissance that Americans find so sexy?

How come there are so many novels, for example, about the affair between Queen Elizabeth I and Robert Dudley? The titles alone are scandalous: Elizabeth I: Red Rose of the House of Tudor; Virgin: Prelude to the Throne; The Queen’s Fool; The Secret Diary of Anne Boleyn; The Virgin’s Lover; The Queen and the Gypsy; All the Queen’s Men; The Queen’s Bastard; My Enemy the Queen; Elizabeth & Leicester. This is more than a fetish for scheming redheads and virile swordsmen. This is a fetish that claims Helen Mirren and Cate Blanchett as mascots. And this is the English Renaissance; just imagine what would happen if American nerds discovered 16th Century Florence — a world of constant dueling, family feuds, passionate artistry, and omnisexual love. Jonathan Rhys Meyers may cause women to convulse with longing, but Henry VIII wasn’t half the man Leonardo da Vinci was.
