Renaissance Festival: 5

Renaissance Faire 025

Two youths pass me, and their red faces nearly explode with giddiness: Each has purchased a Norman broadsword, and they clutch their hilts with adolescent lust. Although the swords are sheathed and bounce against their calves, the two boys have satisfied a life-long dream — to carry a sword in public. When NRA members carry concealed firearms through Tombstone, Arizona, they are likely thrilled by the same experience. But unlike a six-shooter, a sword is also an ancient symbol of manhood, patriotism, Christian piety and legendary heroics. A cowboy can still turn to lassos and whiskey. Without his sword, a knight is nothing.
