G-20 Protest: 1

G-20 063

The moment we arrived at the G-20 Protest, I feel disoriented and strange. Thursday, 2:30 p.m. The streets of Pittsburgh were quiet, nearly empty. The calm before the storm. And then we turned a corner to find Arsenal Park, packed with 400 protesters. A reverend called through his megaphone, “Peace-alooyah!” Cameras clicked. Eyes darted. Crowds gathered and dispersed. On the fringes, police officers leaned against walls or stood at attention in full riot gear. On a cobbled floor, someone dressed as a bloody seal writhed on the ground, imitating the death-throes of a wounded mammal. As the creature buckled, cameras clicked from all angles.
